WHAT Is MOBIE?
George Clarke founded MOBIE in 2017 as an educational charity to train and inspire young people to innovate in the design and construction of HOMES in the UK and abroad. The charity’s purpose is to attract and inspire future creators of the Built Environment through exciting new technical and vocational courses and schools outreach. It is for younger generations to define how they want to live now and in the future and MOBIE will help them do it. You can read more on why George felt compelled to found MOBIE here.
“Home is the most important piece of architecture in our lives. It crafts the way we live, and how we grow as families and communities. A well-designed home can enhance the way we live and promote our well-being”
George Clarke – MOBIE Founder
MOBIE is an education and training charity which inspires new generations into the building profession to fundamentally transform the way we think about, design and construct homes
MOBIE spearheads the need to advance home design and innovate construction thinking, working with both the industry and government to provide homes that will genuinely transform the way we live in Britain
WHY MOBIE IS NEEDED
LACK OF CHANGE
Unfortunately, British housing is in a state of crisis. The government itself has stated that the housing market is 'broken'. The standard and quality of the mass housing estates we are building simply aren't good enough.
LACK OF SUPPLY
There is a chronic shortage of homes of the right type, at the right price and in the right location. The speed of construction, cost, quality and environmental performance of home building in UK is lamentable even compared with quite conservative practice elsewhere in the World.
LACK OF PEOPLE & SKILLS
Meanwhile a generation of talented young people are turning their back on careers in the construction industry because house building simply doesn't inspire them.
LACK OF DESIGN QUALITY
The housing sector does not invest nearly enough to research and develop the types of homes that people want to live in. Stayed designs are endlessly repated, Homes are regarded as units, while innovative design is seen as a barrier to cost and programme. We need to do better than identikit boxes.
LACK OF DISRUPTION
We still fundamentally build homes the way we did hundreds of years ago. Whilst manufacturing technology in other industries has advanced at incredible rates, the house building industry has been stagnant. It’s genuinely time for systematic change.
LACK OF SOCIAL MOBILITY
The home building industry needs to enable those from disadvantaged or from different socio-economic backgrounds to find routes to opportunity. This includes those not in education, employment or training, offenders, or those with a disability.
WHAT MOBIE DOES
MOBIE inspires everyone, of any age, with any level of qualification to think about home and the way we live. Through engaging, making, prototyping and building pioneering homes that inspire generations of future home thinkers
There is an urgent need for an interdisciplinary space in which the creative and energetic minds can come together to reinvent the idea of what homes are and how they are made. MOBIE is that creative space.
research + development
In parallel to our educational initiatives, the MOBIE team bring together a breadth of experience in the design an delivery of OSM homes. Our experience in the industry alongside our commitment to R+D continually inform the charity’s educational strategy.
MOBIE provides a unique educational pathway from schools to Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) courses which are open to all. Ensuring that learning can be accessed and delivered at the levels that students want and the construction industry needs.
MOBIE partners with the very best leaders in global technology and manufacturing to share knowledge, facilities, expertise and ensure relevant routes to employment and a continued dialogue between education and industry.
TRAIning and reTraining
MOBIE has launched the first ever Higher and Further Education courses in 'Advanced Home Futures' and 'Advanced Home Construction', with the belief that people, skills and innovation will create a cultural shift in the home industry. The courses will initially launch at three centres: Teesside University, Harlow College, University of Wolverhampton in 2018.
